The oboe is characterized by its high sonority in view of both lyricism
and motility. Besides its homogeneous tone color, I could get some kind
of new feel of the oboe with the use of extended techniques like chords,
overblowing,double-trills,and so on. In this unrestricted line of delicate
breath of the oboe mingles the piano, brings up a sound texture, or presents
a background, which creates a stream of irreversible time in infinite space,
and that I hope to be a hearty cry,never in a loud voice.
Completed in Siena in the summer of 1989, got a prize in the Japan Music
Competition the same year. A little revision was made in 1991. |

This piece was composed in the summer last year on the basis of my first
piece for shakuhachi solo which I wrote about seven years ago,and was given
its first performance by MITSUHASHI Kifu.
I had tried several times to write another before that, but somehow I had
kept away from shakuhachi for a long while. I had been feeling a kind of
"distance"toward shakuhachi as a traditional instrument as I
came to know many various Japanese works in history.
When you listen to the shakuhachi play some phrase, for example,its tone
color always bears an inviolable world of its own which is innate in the
instrument. And,as compared with the so-called Western instruments, much
greater part is to be put into the hands of players. I believe,however,therein
lies the attractiveness of shakuhachi.
After such a perplexity and complications I got free flom the standpoint
of "the East and the West in music"and could finally take a new
look at the shakuhachi as a pure material partaking both of expressiveness
closely akin to human voice and of instrumental motility.
Now I have found a fresh and extreme potentiality in its nature which has
a certain "space"that can never be completely filled up with
any sound, and makes the sound without sounds come up clear at tke same
